Chaos at Redwing Mine as guards gun down panner and seriously wound colleague

Three Redwing mine security guards were recently arrested by police after they shot dead a gold panner while seriously injuring another one in Rezende area under Chief Mutasa.

The guards - Cleton Matsika, 35, William Mutuswa, 46, of Nyamutenha village, Nyamaropa Nyanga and Benedict Chikanda, 53, of Samukange village Makoni - have since appeared before magistrate courts.

They were charged with murder and attempted murder and remanded to September 15 on $50 bail each.

The deceased was identified as Tafadzwa Lewani, 21, of Bush Bar Complex in Penhalonga. He was reportedly shot on the left side of the abdomen and died on the spot.

His colleague David Madzikatire sustained serious injuries and admitted at a local hospital.

Manicaland province deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said on August 26, and at around 0900hrs, Lewani in company of Adam Araton, 33, David Madzikatire and some three unnamed colleagues went to Redwing Mine to illegally pan for gold.
